Shots on Target Form and Home Win Odds: Is the Price Keeping Up?

Pre-match shots-on-target form moves the home win price almost step for step. The small leftover favours the better-shooting hosts, but it only pays at the best price.

The question
When the home side has had the better shots-on-target difference over the previous five games, does it win more often than the 1X2 price says?
Sample
22 European divisions, division-seasons with match stats from 2000/01 to 2025/26; matches where both teams had five earlier league games with stats that season: 103,393 matches

Shots on target are the stat I trust most when I want to know whether a side's results are earned. This study uses pre-match form only: each team's net shots on target over its previous five league games, never the stat line of the match being priced. The question is simple. When the home side has been clearly better on target, does the 1X2 price keep up?

Across 103,393 matches the answer is mostly yes, but not entirely. Home sides with an edge of +4 per game or higher won 65.9% against a margin-free price of 62.5%, and every band from 0 to +1 upwards beat its price. That reasoning feeds into my win draw win tips today page, though the gap is thin and only survives at the best available price.

Stat line 1Home win rate tracks shot-on-target edge, and slightly outruns it

Each row pairs the margin-free price with what actually happened. The home win rate climbs from 25.8% in the lowest band to 65.9% in the highest, and the price climbs with it from 27.2% to 62.5%. The market is clearly reading this stat. What matters is the size of the leftover.

The leftover runs one way. Every band from 0 to +1 upwards finished above its price, with +1 to +2 ahead by +1.5 points and +2 to +4 by +2.1 points. Every band below 0 finished under its price, by between −1.4 and −0.2 points. The top band covers 7,469 games, and its gap of +3.4 points sits well outside the 95% range of ±1.1 points.

My old underwriting instincts call this a mild under-reaction rather than a blind spot. Fair odds are 1 divided by the frequency, so a 65.9% outcome deserves a shorter price than a 62.5% one, but not a dramatically shorter one.

Stat line 2The draw barely moves while home and away swap places

Grouping the edge into four buckets shows where the probability goes. Where the hosts held an edge of 2 or more, the split was 58.7% home wins, 23.0% draws and 18.3% away wins. Flip it so the visitors held that edge, and the split becomes 31.0% home wins, 26.6% draws and 42.4% away wins.

The draw stays between 23.0% and 28.1% across all four groups. Shot dominance mostly turns away wins into home wins and back again. It does very little to turn draws into decisive results.

This is why a strong on-target profile never talks me out of respecting the draw. Even with the hosts well on top, close to a quarter of games still finished level, and the home price has to carry that cost.

Stat line 3Only the best available price turns the edge positive

Beating the price on hit rate is not the same as making a profit, because the margin sits on top. Backing the home side with an edge of +4 or higher at flat stakes returned −0.9% at a major bookmaker's price and +2.3% at the best available price. Across all 103,393 matches, the same blind approach returned −5.8% and −1.7%.

The losses deepen as the edge turns against the hosts, reaching −10.5% at a major bookmaker's price in the −4 or lower band. In the middle bands, the best price only nudges returns above zero, to +0.3% in the 0 to +1 band and +0.2% in the +1 to +2 band.

Here is my main caveat. Most of this signal is already inside the price, and gaps of one or two points can be noise even at this sample size. A +2.3% return in one band is not a system, and at a single bookmaker's price every band lost money.

Stat line 4Top flights hold the gap better than lower divisions

This table covers home edges of +2 or more. In the top flights, these hosts won 63.8% of 11,716 matches against 60.7% priced, a gap of +3.1 points. The lower divisions managed 53.5% of 11,429 against 51.6% priced, a gap of +1.9 points. They also returned −3.0% at a major bookmaker's price, against −1.2% for the top flights.

By era, the gap was +2.8 points in 2000/01–2012/13, +2.9 points in 2013/14–2019/20 and +1.9 points in 2020/21–2025/26. The narrower figure in the latest period suggests the market has been closing in on this stat.

The older seasons also lean British, because most other divisions only have stats from 2017/18. I read the early-era figures as largely an English and Scottish story.

Sheet verdict

  • Shop for the best price

In the +4 or higher band, the return was −0.9% at a major bookmaker's price and +2.3% at the best available price. The price you take decides whether this profile is worth anything.

  • Keep the draw priced

The draw rate held between 23.0% and 28.1% whatever the edge. A dominant on-target profile is no reason to shade your draw estimate down.

  • Weight top-flight form higher

Home edges of +2 or more beat their price by +3.1 points in the top flights and by +1.9 in the lower divisions. The most recent era also shows the smallest gap, at +1.9 points.

Questions bettors ask

Do teams with more shots on target win more often at home?

Yes. Home sides with a five-game net edge of +4 per game or higher won 65.9% of matches. When the visitors held an edge of −4 or lower, the home side won 25.8%.

Do bookmakers price shots-on-target form correctly?

Mostly. The margin-free price for the +4 or higher band was 62.5% against 65.9% actual. The market moves strongly with the stat but slightly under-reacts at the extremes.

Is backing home sides with better shot form profitable?

Not at a single bookmaker, where the +4 or higher band returned −0.9%. At the best available price it returned +2.3%, a thin margin that chance could partly explain.
