I trained as a civil engineer in Shanghai, and the job left a permanent mark on how I see a football match — as a system with loads, stresses and failure points rather than a story with heroes. Late shifts meant catching European kick-offs in the small hours with the sound off, and watching mute changes what you notice. Stripped of the commentary telling me who was supposedly brilliant, I started counting things instead: how quickly the ball travelled forward, how often a genuine opening appeared, how long stretches passed with nothing happening at all. The total was simply the sum of those forces. Over/under is a market people are sure they understand and mostly misread. My work is built on tempo and chance quality far more than reputation — how fast a side drives the ball upfield, how aggressively it presses, how many real openings it engineers rather than how much sterile possession it accumulates. I fold in the weather, the stakes, a sodden pitch, a meaningless end-of-season fixture both teams are happy to let drift to nothing. A glittering attacking name on a wet night in a match neither side dares lose can be the quietest under on the entire card. Eight years in, I hold genuine respect for how one scruffy goal can topple a total I had read perfectly, or how a late flurry can sail past a line that looked rock solid.
