Projected Shots on Target and Over 3.5 Goals: A Last-5 Test
Shots-on-target form predicts high-scoring matches well. The goals market already knows that, and the gaps beyond the price are close to zero.

| Over 3.5 goals, all matches with last-5 form | 28.0% |
|---|---|
| Over 3.5 when 11+ shots on target projected | 37.6% |
| Gap vs price-matched rate, 11+ band | −0.2 points |
| Fair odds, over 4.5 in the 11+ band | 4.87 |

- The question
- When both teams have been producing and allowing lots of shots on target over their last five games, how often does the next match go over 3.5 and 4.5 goals, and is that already in the price?
- Sample
- 54,616 league matches in 21 European divisions, 2017/18–2025/26, where both sides had five earlier league games with full statistics in the same season
Shots on target feel like the most honest number in football. A side that keeps testing the goalkeeper should eventually turn that into goals. So I put a plain engineering question to 54,616 league matches: when both teams' last-5 form points to a high combined count of shots on target, how often does the next match go over 3.5 and 4.5 goals, and has the goals price already absorbed it?
This file uses pre-match form, not the stat line of the match itself. Each projection is built only from the previous five league games of the same season. The headline answer is that the stat works and the market knows it: with 11+ projected shots on target, over 3.5 landed 37.6% against a price-matched 37.8%, a gap of −0.2 points. It is the first pricing check I run before anything reaches my over/under football tips page.
Stat line 1Over 3.5 climbs with shot form, and so does the price
The dumbbell puts two rates side by side for each band of projected shots on target: what the goals price implied, and what actually happened. Read down through the bands and both markers climb together, from 21.9% actual in the under-7 band to 37.6% in the 11+ band.
The price moved almost exactly as far, from 22.0% to 37.8%. The load was real, and the market had already calculated it.

| Price-matched | Actual | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 7 (6,013 matches) | 22.0% | 21.9% | ±1 |
| 7–8 (13,809 matches) | 24.9% | 24.4% | ±0.7 |
| 8–9 (16,825 matches) | 27.8% | 27.6% | ±0.7 |
| 9–10 (11,352 matches) | 31.1% | 31.7% | ±0.9 |
| 10–11 (4,739 matches) | 34.6% | 35.0% | ±1.4 |
| 11+ (1,878 matches) | 37.8% | 37.6% | ±2.2 |
The middle bands tell the same story. The 8–9 band (16,825 matches) produced 27.6% against 27.8%, and the 9–10 band (11,352 matches) produced 31.7% against 31.1%. In the 11+ band the 95% range is ±2.2 points, far wider than the gap itself, so none of these differences is anything I would build a bet on.
Stat line 2Every goal line shifts upward as shot form rises
The heatmap widens the view to every line from over 0.5 to over 4.5. Comparing the under-7 band with the 11+ band, over 1.5 moves from 69.2% to 83.8%, and over 2.5 moves from 42.8% to 62.0%.
The lowest line barely changes, from 90.1% to 95.5%, because almost every match clears it anyway. The real movement sits in the middle and upper lines, which is where a bettor's attention naturally goes.

| O0.5 | O1.5 | O2.5 | O3.5 | O4.5 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 7 | 90.1% | 69.2% | 42.8% | 21.9% | 9.7% |
| 7–8 | 91.0% | 71.4% | 46.4% | 24.4% | 10.8% |
| 8–9 | 92.9% | 74.7% | 50.1% | 27.6% | 13.2% |
| 9–10 | 94.0% | 78.0% | 54.2% | 31.7% | 15.8% |
| 10–11 | 94.6% | 81.4% | 58.3% | 35.0% | 17.9% |
| 11+ | 95.5% | 83.8% | 62.0% | 37.6% | 20.6% |
To me this reads like a stress diagram. More shots on target push the whole distribution of goals upward, rather than just adding a single extra goal to the odd match.
Stat line 3Matches with 5+ goals roughly double across the bands
Over 4.5 is the tail of the distribution, and it responds strongly to shot form. It rises from 9.7% in the lowest band to 20.6% in the highest, about twice as often, which puts fair odds at 10.35 and 4.87.
This is the line where bettors are most tempted, because the step up looks dramatic on a bar chart. The price-matched rate in the 11+ band, though, was 20.4%, sitting almost on top of what happened.

Stat line 4Splits by tier and era wobble around zero
Here I split the 10+ band to look for pockets the market might misjudge. Top flights show 36.6% against 36.9%, a gap of −0.3 points. Lower divisions show 33.4% against 31.6%, a gap of +1.8 points, but on only 1,817 matches.
The eras swing from +0.7 to −1.9 and back to +1.2 points, which looks like noise rather than a pattern. The main caveat applies firmly here: most of the stat's value is already in the goals price, the remaining gaps are small, and shot-on-target recording varies slightly between leagues, so this is not a betting system.
| Split | Matches | Over 3.5 | Price-matched | Gap (pts) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Top flights | 4,800 | 36.6% | 36.9% | −0.3 |
| Lower divisions | 1,817 | 33.4% | 31.6% | +1.8 |
| 2017/18–2019/20 | 2,591 | 35.1% | 34.4% | +0.7 |
| 2020/21–2022/23 | 1,753 | 33.3% | 35.2% | −1.9 |

Stat line 5Baselines and fair odds to check against the price
This table gives the reference points I keep beside any price. Across all 54,616 matches, over 3.5 landed 28.0% (fair odds 3.57) and over 4.5 landed 13.4% (fair odds 7.46), with the price-matched rates at 28.0% and 13.5%.
The band rows anchor the extremes: 9.7% against 9.5% for over 4.5 in the under-7 band, and 20.6% ±1.8 against 20.4% in the 11+ band. If odds on offer are shorter than the fair figure, the shot form has already been paid for.
| Group | Matches | Line | Actual (95% range) | Price-matched | Fair odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| All matches | 54,616 | Over 3.5 | 28.0% ±0.4 | 28.0% | 3.57 |
| All matches | 54,616 | Over 4.5 | 13.4% ±0.3 | 13.5% | 7.46 |
| Under 7 projected | 6,013 | Over 4.5 | 9.7% ±0.7 | 9.5% | 10.35 |
| 11+ projected | 1,878 | Over 4.5 | 20.6% ±1.8 | 20.4% | 4.87 |
Sheet verdict
- Assume high counts are priced
With 11+ projected shots on target, over 3.5 landed 37.6% against a price-matched 37.8%. Expect the odds to have moved before you get there.
- Compare against fair odds
In the 11+ band, fair odds for over 4.5 are 4.87. A shorter price means the shot form has no value left in it.
- Discount small split gaps
The +1.8 point gap in lower divisions rests on 1,817 matches, and the eras swing between −1.9 and +1.2. Treat these as noise until more data agrees.
