I came to the game sideways, through coaching kids on dusty Marrakesh pitches before I ever bet a dirham on anything. Standing on the touchline week after week, I stopped seeing matches as results and started seeing them as habits — which defender always steps up a beat too late, which forward keeps gambling on the shoulder, which keeper turns to stone the moment a cross comes in. Players, I learned, repeat themselves far more than they surprise you, and that repetition is the whole game once you know where to look. Both-teams-to-score wears a simple mask and almost never is simple underneath. I begin with the soft spots on each side — the full-back caught upfield, the dangerously high line, the goalkeeper unconvincing under a high ball — and weigh that against whether each attack actually fashions clear openings or merely keeps the ball moving prettily. Game state runs through all of it: a team hunting an equaliser and a team protecting a lead are playing two different sports on the same grass. Two leaky defences with real intent up top are worth far more to me than two celebrated forward lines that vanish on the road. Nine years in, I respect how cruelly one stubborn, disciplined defensive night can sink a perfectly reasoned yes, and how a freak own goal can rescue a no that deserved to die.
