Hot Finishing and BTTS: Does a Last-5 Conversion Spike Carry Over?

Pre-match finishing form looks loud on a stats sheet. Over 95,501 league matches it barely shifts how often both teams score, but it does nudge the market's view.

The question
When two teams have been converting an unusually high or low share of their shots on target over the last five games, does that change how often both score in the next match?
Sample
22 European divisions with match statistics, 2005/06–2025/26, 95,501 league matches

This file works from pre-match form, not in-match stats. It covers the share of shots on target both sides turned into goals over their previous five league games, taken before kick-off. When two teams arrive finishing hot, or ice cold, does that change how often both score next time? It is the question I hear most from readers checking my BTTS predictions page.

The short answer is no, not in any way that matters to the actual result. Across 22 European divisions from 2005/06–2025/26, BTTS landed 52.0% of the time after cold finishing and 52.5% after hot finishing, against an overall 52.2%. The interesting part is how the market reacts to those streaks, and that is where the charts are worth your attention.

Stat line 1Extreme finishing over five games snaps back quickly

Start with the habit underneath. Pairs converting 45% or more over the last five games averaged 48.6%, then converted 31.8% in the next match. Cold pairs under 20% averaged 16.3% and recovered to 25.3%. The middle of the table hardly moves: the 30–34% band went from 32.3% to 30.5%.

From the touchline this makes sense to me. A striker who scores with every effort for a fortnight has not become a different player, and a keeper who has let everything in has not forgotten how to dive. Five games is only around 40 to 50 shots on target, so most of the swing is noise.

Notice that the next-match figures still rise gently from cold to hot. There is a faint trace of real quality, but it is a whisper beside the size of the streaks themselves.

Stat line 2Actual BTTS stays flat while the market leans upward

Here is the heart of it. The actual BTTS line sits almost level, between 51.9% and 52.9% in every band. The market-derived line climbs steadily, from 50.9% in the coldest band to 53.2% in the hottest.

So the price reads hot finishing as a sign that goals are coming from both ends, and the results do not follow. The two lines cross around the middle bands, where the market and reality agree almost exactly.

To me that is the market chasing rhythm that has already gone quiet. Cold sides get priced a touch too shy; hot sides a touch too generous.

Stat line 3Cold finishing runs above the market, especially in top flights

Splitting by tier, the under-20% band beat the market by +1.6 points in top-flight games and +0.7 points in the lower divisions. At the other end, the 45%+ band was level in the top flights and −1.2 in the lower leagues, with the 40–44% band negative in both.

The pattern holds its shape in both tiers: positive on the cold side, drifting negative on the hot side. The middle bands wobble either side of zero, which is what noise looks like.

I would not lean on the tier split hard. These are small gaps, and the smaller the sub-sample, the more they bounce.

Stat line 4Fair odds barely shift from one band to the next

The table puts prices on it. Fair BTTS odds were 1.92 after cold finishing and 1.90 after hot finishing, with 1.91 across all matches. Measured at market-fair odds, the under-20% band returned +2.3% on 10,626 games, while the 45%+ band, the smallest at 3,393 games, returned −1.1%.

Now the honest caveat. There are no BTTS prices in the records, so the market figure is rebuilt from match-result and Over/Under 2.5 prices, and a real BTTS price carries a margin of several points. That margin is bigger than every gap here, so these returns are a benchmark against the market's view, not money you could have banked.

Read the 95% ranges too. The cold band's 51.1% to 52.9% overlaps the overall figure, so this is a lean worth knowing, not an edge to build a staking plan on.

Sheet verdict

  • Discount hot finishing streaks

Pairs converting 45% or more over five games fell to 31.8% next time, and BTTS stayed at 52.5%. Do not let a scoring spree alone talk you into Yes.

  • Respect cold sides' attacks

After an under-20% spell, conversion recovered to 25.3% and BTTS still landed 52.0%, above the market's 50.9%. Cold finishing is not a reason to back No.

  • Treat gaps as leans

The best gap was +1.1 points, inside the 95% range and smaller than a typical BTTS margin. Use it as a tiebreaker after the tactical read, never as the reason for a bet.

Questions bettors ask

Does a team's recent shot conversion predict both teams to score?

Barely. BTTS was 52.0% after under-20% finishing and 52.5% after 45%+ finishing, against 52.2% across all 95,501 matches.

Do hot-finishing teams keep converting at the same rate?

No. Pairs averaging 48.6% over their last five games converted 31.8% in the next match, close to the overall 29.4%.

Is there value backing BTTS after cold finishing?

Against the rebuilt market price the under-20% band returned +2.3%, but that is a benchmark, not a bettable return. Real BTTS prices carry a margin of several points, which would swallow a gap this small.
