How Often Does a Match End 1-0? Shot Volume Form of Both Sides
Quiet shot form on both sides nudges the single-goal scoreline up, but most of that is already in the prices. Here is how much is left over, and how fragile it is.

| of matches ended 1-0 or 0-1 | 18.0% |
|---|---|
| in matches between low-volume sides | 20.0% |
| in matches between high-volume sides | 13.3% |
| low-volume band against price-matched | +1.2 points |

Every correct score punter has a soft spot for the 1-0. It looks like the natural result of two cautious sides, so I wanted to test that instinct against the numbers. This file uses pre-match form, not in-match stats: the average total shots in each side's previous five league games, combined for both teams, measured before kick-off. The question is whether quiet form produces more 1-0 and 0-1 results than the 1X2 and goals prices already suggest.
Across 95,491 matches the score finished 1-0 or 0-1 in 18.0%, fair odds 5.56, exactly level with the price-matched 18.0%. Between low-volume sides the rate rose to 20.0%, a gap of +1.2 points over what prices implied, while between high-volume sides it fell to 13.3%. These frequencies sit behind my daily scoreline tips page, but they describe history. They are not a rule that pays.
Stat line 1Quiet shot form lifts the 1-0, mostly as priced
Each row compares the actual 1-0 or 0-1 rate with the price-matched rate for that shot-volume band. Under 20 shots per game, the single-goal result landed in 20.0% of 14,920 matches (95% range ±0.6), against 18.8% price-matched, so fair odds come out at 5.00. At 30+ shots it dropped to 13.3% of 1,441 matches (95% range ±1.8), against 14.3%, fair odds 7.54.
The more important line is the grey one. The price-matched rate itself fell from 18.8% in the quietest band to 14.3% in the busiest, a move of −4.5 points. The market already knows that quiet teams play tighter matches. The bands in the middle, such as 24-25 shots at 17.7% against 17.8%, show almost no daylight at all.
View the data: a 1-0 either way by shot volume
| Price-matched | Actual | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 20 (14,920 matches) | 18.8% | 20.0% | ±0.6 |
| 20-21 (16,367 matches) | 18.9% | 19.0% | ±0.6 |
| 22-23 (21,491 matches) | 18.7% | 18.8% | ±0.5 |
| 24-25 (21,908 matches) | 17.8% | 17.7% | ±0.5 |
| 26-27 (14,065 matches) | 16.6% | 15.8% | ±0.6 |
| 28-29 (5,266 matches) | 15.4% | 14.1% | ±0.9 |
| 30+ (1,441 matches) | 14.3% | 13.3% | ±1.8 |
| All matches (95,491 matches) | 18.0% | 18.0% | ±0.2 |
My main caveat sits here. Most of the difference between bands is already in the pre-match 1X2 and over/under prices, and gaps of 1-2 points sit inside the 95% ranges. The +6.4% return at margin-free fair odds in the under-20 band, and the −7.0% at 30+, come from prices with no margin. A real exact-score price carries one, so real returns would be lower.
Stat line 2The home 1-0 holds up better than the away 0-1
Splitting the result by direction shows both lines sloping down as shot volume rises, but not in the same way. In the under-20 band 1-0 alone came in 11.4% of matches and 0-1 in 8.6%. At 30+ shots those rates fell to 8.0% and 5.3%.
For a correct score bettor this matters because the two scorelines are separate selections at separate prices. In busy matches the away single-goal win thins out faster in relative terms. That suggests open, high-shot games tend to give a home side enough chances to avoid losing by one.
View the data: 1-0 and 0-1 by shot volume
| 1-0 | 0-1 | |
|---|---|---|
| Under 20 | 11.4% | 8.6% |
| 20-21 | 10.6% | 8.4% |
| 22-23 | 10.8% | 8.0% |
| 24-25 | 10.2% | 7.5% |
| 26-27 | 8.9% | 6.9% |
| 28-29 | 8.4% | 5.7% |
| 30+ | 8.0% | 5.3% |
I don't treat the split as a second edge. I use it as a reason to keep the home 1-0 in my fan of results more often than the 0-1 when both sides arrive with quiet numbers.
Stat line 3The low-volume gap shrank in the recent era
The heatmap shows actual minus price-matched, in points, for two eras. In 2005/06-2015/16 the under-22 band ran at +1.2 points. In 2016/17-2025/26 that fell to +0.1 points, which is effectively nothing. Meanwhile the 26+ band in the recent era ran −1.1 points over 13,441 matches.
Read this with care, because the two eras do not cover the same divisions. Before 2016/17, shot data come mainly from English and some top-flight divisions, so the older edge may reflect those leagues rather than a market that has since corrected.
View the data: actual minus price-matched, by era
| Under 22 | 22-25 | 26+ | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2005/06-2015/16 | 1.2 pts | −0.9 pts | −0.7 pts |
| 2016/17-2025/26 | 0.1 pts | 0.5 pts | −1.1 pts |
What I take from this is that the quiet-form premium has largely gone. The busier side of the grid, where single-goal results fell short of prices, has been the more stable pattern in recent seasons.
Sheet verdict
- Start from the price
The price-matched rate already drops from 18.8% to 14.3% across the bands, so convert the 1X2 and goals odds first. Then ask whether shot form adds anything.
- Discount the quiet-form premium
The under-22 gap was +1.2 points in the older era but only +0.1 points in 2016/17-2025/26. Treat low shot volume as a small tilt, not a reason to bet.
- Be wary in busy matches
In the 30+ band the 1-0 or 0-1 came in 13.3% against 14.3% price-matched, with fair odds of 7.54. Recent 26+ matches also ran −1.1 points, so a short single-goal price in a high-shot pairing needs a hard look.
Questions bettors ask
How often does a football match end 1-0 or 0-1?
Across 95,491 matches in this study, 18.0% finished 1-0 or 0-1, which gives fair odds of 5.56. That matched the price-matched expectation exactly.
Do low-shot teams produce more 1-0 results?
Yes. Between sides averaging under 20 shots per game, the result came in 20.0% of matches against 18.8% price-matched. That gap sits close to the 95% range of ±0.6, and most of the effect is already in the odds.
Is 1-0 more likely than 0-1 in low-scoring matchups?
In the under-20 band, 1-0 alone came in 11.4% of matches and 0-1 in 8.6%. The home single-goal win stayed more common in every shot-volume band.
